CAVESTANY (or Cabestany): The genealogists Arturo and Alberto García Carraffa, in his book: "El Solar catalán, valenciano y balear" affirms that this family is an original lineage of Roussillon, France. In Catalonia, Spain, they gave their name to the place of Cavestany, judicial district of Cervera, Lleida, Spain. Pedro Cabestany cames from Roussillon, France, to the site of Burriana, Castellón, serving for the Aragonese monarch, Don Jaime I and, conquered Valencia at his expense, the king gave him the house and lands that belonged to the Moor Ali-Amet. There were also people of this surname in Aragón. Armand de Fluvi in his book "Origin i escts de cognoms catalans" affirms that this surname comes from the namesake of the same name of Northern Catalonia, and derives from the Latin: "caput stagni" which means "head of the pond". They settled in Barcelona, Barber del Vallés, Belianes, Passanant, Querol, Riba-roja, Tarragona, Tortosa, Valls, etc. Juan de Cavestany was a merchant, a member of the Holy Office of the Inquisition and a neighbor of Barberán, in the archbishopric of Tarragona, Spain, in the year 1623. Jenaro Cavestany González Landín was an Official of the First Class of the Public Treasury, Head of the Bureau of Contributions of Cuenca, Economic Administration of Spain, in the year 1875.
